Following on from the last Step-by-Step dedicated to the Infantry of the Enlightened, the attention now turns to the more mechanical weapons of the Enlightened’s arsenal, the Battle Tripods.

Follow along with Daz as he shows you how to paint the imposing metallic machines of the Enlightened, complete with an otherworldly, green glow from the Enlightened Faction Battlegroup.

All paints mentioned are Vallejo unless stated otherwise.

Armour

Step 1: To begin, I applied a rough basecoat of Hull Red into the recesses of the armour plating and a small area around that.

Step 2: Using a watered-down mix of 50/50 Basalt Grey and Black, I proceeded to basecoat the main areas of the armour, ensuring that the previous layer was still widely visible. Don’t worry if this layer is a little patchy - that will help build texture as we go.

Step 3: The first highlight was applied using watered-down Basalt Grey. This was applied to the raised areas and blended over two passes. Once again, patchiness is not an issue.

Step 4: Adding a spot of Wolf Grey to the mix from the previous step, I applied this in a rough, scratchy manner from the raised centre outwards to create even more visual interest.

Step 5: I applied a glaze of Hull Red into the recesses to bring back the original basecoat.

Step 6: The first glaze I applied was a 50/50 mix of Parasite Brown / Orange Fire, painting into the deepest recesses to simulate rust.

Step 7: Then, I added a glaze of 50/50 Basalt Grey / Wolf Grey to the upper surfaces and blended out and downwards towards the recesses.

Step 8: To finish the armour plating, I applied an edge highlight of the previous mix across the deepest recesses.

Golden Elements

Step 9: The gold areas were given an initial basecoat of a 50/50 mix of Flat Earth and Darkstar Brass.

Step 10: I added around 25% Sun Yellow to the previous mix for the first highlight.

Step 11: Adding another 25% Sun Yellow to the mix in Step 10 for the next highlight.

Step 12: Adding a spot of Ice Yellow, I painted in the next highlight.

Step 13: Bag of Bones Xpress was used as a glaze to unify the highlights.

Step 14: To finish up with the gold, I applied an edge highlight of Ice Yellow to all of the areas I painted in this section and picked out rivets and details at the same time.

Copper Elements

Step 15: I applied a basecoat of 50/50 Hull Red and Darkstar Copper

Step 16: I added 50% Parasite Brown to the previous mix for the first highlight.

Step 17: Adding 25% Ice Yellow to the Step 2 mix, the next highlight.was painted.

Step 18: I used a glaze of Copper Brown Xpress Paint to tie all of the copper elements together.

Green Glow

Step 19: To achieve the glowing green effect, I started with a basecoat of Sick Green.

Step 20: The first highlight was created by adding 50% Sun Yellow to the Sick Green.

Step 21: Increasing the ratio of Sun Yellow by another 25%, the next highlight was applied.

Step 22: Taking the mix from Step 21, I added 25% Ice Yellow for the next highlight

Step 23: I used pure Ice Yellow for the final highlight, making sure to add some reflective points across the lenses to get that glassy look.

And there you have it, the basis of an incredible Enlightened Tripod, ready to devastate the tabletop.
